Head down US Highway 64 West from Highlands toward Franklin to see one of the most popular waterfalls in the area, Dry Falls. This 80-foot waterfall is located along the Cullasaja River Gorge in the Nantahala National Forest and is part of the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway. From Highlands take US 64 west toward Franklin for 3.2 miles until you reach a large parking area on the left. There is a $3 fee to park. The paved trail descends via stairs then takes are sharp turn to the left where the trail continues to the waterfall. The trail curves behind the waterfall, allowing you to stay dry while the water cascades over the overhanging bluff. There is also a viewing platform from the parking lot where the waterfall can be seen without going down the steps.
