INSIDER: TINA
Tina is a lifelong resident of Highlands, where her family has deep roots spanning multiple generations, including her parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. She has raised her two beautiful daughters in Highlands, and now her grandchildren are growing up in the community as well.
Q: What sets Highlands, NC apart from other destinations?
A: Our natural beauty and the people who live here. We genuinely care for one another, offering unwavering support and fostering a strong sense of community.
Q: What is your “can’t miss” outdoor experience in Highlands?
A: There is no single "can't miss" spot—every outdoor experience here is a must for all ages. Our breathtaking vistas and stunning waterfalls are truly captivating. Simply step outside, or you will “miss” the magic.
Q: What level of experience is needed to enjoy this activity (novice, intermediate or advanced)?
A: While some hikes require a higher level of fitness, there is something for everyone to enjoy. No matter your ability, you can experience the beauty and adventure we have to offer.
Q: How do you plan/prepare for your outdoor adventure?
A: It depends on the activity. For a big hike or backpacking trip, I start training months in advance, often with a loaded backpack. For a day hike, I pack water, snacks, download the trail map on an app, and inform someone of my plans. For a water adventure, I bring sunscreen, an umbrella, water, and snacks.
Q: How do you put one Outdoor NC Leave No Trace principle in action before/during/or after your activity?
A: Bring everything back with you. Carry a small backpack, and remember: if you can pack it in, you can pack it out.
Q: What piece of outdoor equipment is your must-have?
A: For long hikes, my must-have is a pair of hiking poles. They provide essential support for uphill and downhill terrain and are invaluable for creek crossings.
Q: Favorite place before or after an outdoor activity for a meal/beverage?
A: The Stubborn Bull is my top choice. They offer a diverse selection of small plates and excellent cocktails. It is also a fantastic spot for social dining, making it a perfect place to unwind after an adventure.
Q: Most overlooked area/venue/experience in Highlands?
A: That’s a tough one, as it often depends on your fitness level. Personally, I love our Biological Station with its scenic trails and serene lake. Whiteside Mountain is also one of my favorite hikes. We have so many stunning places that it is hard to pick just one.
Q: Share a unique place to stay in the area. Why would you recommend this accommodation?
A: While I haven’t personally stayed in the local hotels, having lived here, I’ve heard wonderful things from visitors who rave about their experiences. Every accommodation in the area has its own charm and offers a unique stay, so I recommend exploring the options based on what suits your preferences.
INSIDER: ANNA
Anna, once a frequent visitor with family ties to Highlands, is now a proud resident of the area. She enjoys hiking and taking walks with her dog, Athena.
Q: What sets Highlands, NC apart from other destinations?
A: Highlands is a unique area because there is a little something for everyone. Whether you are an avid shopper, outdoor enthusiast, or enjoy great dining experiences there is something in Highlands that will keep you coming back! It’s like a breath of fresh air and the perfect place to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life.
Q: What is your “can’t miss” outdoor experience in Highlands?
A: A: Highlands has so many unique outdoor experiences but my “can’t miss” outdoor experience in Highlands is Dry Falls. It is our most popular waterfall for a reason. It’s big, beautiful and easy to get to. You can also walk behind it and feel the water spraying on you which is a unique experience in itself.
Q: What level of experience is needed to enjoy this activity (novice, intermediate or advanced)?
A: Novice. The great thing about Dry Falls is that it only requires walking down a few sets of steps and down a short path to get to the waterfall so you can see this waterfall with little to no experience! It’s perfect for a novice hiker. There is also a handicap accessible viewing platform making it accessible for anyone who wants to witness the power and beauty of nature!
Q: How do you plan/prepare for your outdoor adventure?
A: I always check the weather before doing anything outdoors so I can plan to bring a rain jacket or umbrella. Getting caught in the rain without the proper gear is not ideal!
Q: How do you put one Outdoor NC Leave No Trace principle in action before/during/or after your activity?
A: If I am going on a longer hike where I need to bring a lunch or a snack, I always make sure to hold on to my trash until I can throw it away. It’s so easy to dispose of your trash properly and it keeps our outdoor spaces clean and beautiful for wildlife and those that will be enjoying the space after me.
Q: What piece of outdoor equipment is your must-have?
A: Comfortable shoes. Whether it’s hiking boots or tennis shoes, it is important to have comfortable shoes to wear that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. There are great places in Highlands to find a comfortable pair of shoes for your next outdoor adventure like Bear Mountain Outfitters or Highland Hiker.
Q: Favorite place before or after an outdoor activity for a meal/beverage?
A: After an outdoor activity, I always like to get Mexican food and maybe a margarita at Highlands Burrito.
Q: Most overlooked area/venue/experience in Highlands?
A: The Highlands Plateau Greenway trail, specifically the Mill Creek trail off Oak Street. If you take this short trail and follow the arrows to the Mill Creek Bridge, you can find a beautiful creek with a little bench where you can sit and enjoy the sounds of the rushing water.
Q: Share a unique place to stay in the area. Why would you recommend this accommodation?
A: I think a unique place to stay in Highlands is the Outpost Inn. It’s a small inn less than a mile from town, so it’s easily accessible to Main Street but you also get the secluded relaxing mountain vibe. The décor is unique and beautiful, they have a coffee bar, outdoor firepit and an overall welcoming vibe.
INSIDER: JOHANNA
Johanna is a newer resident of the plateau, having lived here for just two years. She spends her free time with her husband and dogs, finding joy in the waterfalls, stunning views, and refreshing mountain air.

A: Highlands is distinguished by its breathtaking scenic beauty and its charming, picturesque downtown. The combination of nature and vibrant local character make it truly unique.
Q: What is your “can’t miss” outdoor experience in Highlands?
A: The free Outdoor Concerts Series that runs from May – October. Friday nights are in Town Square and Saturday nights in Kelsey Hutchinson Founders Park. My husband and I only missed one or two Saturday night concerts all last year. It is a great time to catch up with neighbors and friends and to meet new people as well. Bring a chair and a meal.

A: I pack camp chairs, a picnic dinner, and a flashlight to ensure we are comfortable and well-equipped for a fun time.
Q: How do you put one Outdoor NC Leave No Trace principle in action before/during/or after your activity?
A: I bring a garbage bag with me when setting out on any outing. Whether we are hiking Whiteside Mountain, on a pontoon boat on nearby Lake Glenville or attending an outdoor concert I make sure I leave with what I brought. We live in such a stunning scenic place, so litter is a huge pet peeve for me.
Q: What piece of outdoor equipment is your must-have?
A: Comfortable hiking shoes. I am extremely cranky if my feet hurt.
Q: Favorite place before or after an outdoor activity for a meal/beverage?
A: The Highlands Smokehouse is my top choice. My husband, who is from Texas, loves BBQ and this spot makes him feel closer to home.
Q: Most overlooked area/venue/experience in Highlands?
A: The Night Sky Trail. Our high elevation, remote location and minimal light, make our town an ideal location for amazing nighttime star gazing.
Q: Share a unique place to stay in the area. Why would you recommend this accommodation?
