October in Highlands blends family fun, autumn beauty, and a touch of mountain mystery. Spooky season here is filled with unforgettable events and folklore.
Enchanted Forest
On October 26, the Highlands Biological Station transforms into an Enchanted Forest. Lantern-lit woodland trails guide families through encounters with costumed forest animals who share stories of nature. This beloved tradition combines science and storytelling with seasonal charm, making it a magical evening for all ages.

Halloween on Main
On October 31, downtown transforms for Halloween on Main. From 6 to 8 pm, Main Street is closed to cars, creating a festive, safe space for children to trick-or-treat. Kids can collect candy from local merchants, while glowing pumpkins and live entertainment set the mood. It is Highlands’ most spirited community gathering, where families and visitors celebrate together in the crisp mountain air.

The Legend of Spearfinger
Adding a hint of folklore to the season, Cherokee legend tells of Spearfinger, a stone-skinned witch with a blade-like finger who haunted these mountains. Said to prey on wanderers and steal their hearts, her tale is still shared today, sending shivers through those who hear it.

This October, experience Highlands’ perfect mix of enchantment, celebration, and spine-tingling lore.
