Set high on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, Highlands offers trails for every kind of outing, from easy walks to sweeping overlooks to more challenging climbs. 2. Sunset Rock

Distance: 0.5-mile walk
Difficulty: Easy
Highlights: Sunset views, granite outcrop, and easy access from downtown

Just a short distance from downtown, Sunset Rock is ideal for a late afternoon stroll. The trail leads to a natural granite overlook with views of Highlands and Brushy Face Mountain. It is a favorite for sunset, but beautiful at any time of day.

3. Whitewater Falls Trail

Distance: 0.6-mile round trip
Difficulty: Easy
Highlights: Spectacular waterfall views and one of the most accessible scenic stops nearby

This easy trail rewards visitors with a view of the highest waterfall in the Eastern United States. It is a wonderful option for travelers who want a short outing with a dramatic payoff, and it works especially well for families or anyone hoping to experience the beauty of Highlands water without a long hike.

4. Chinquapin Mountain

Distance: 3.2-mile round trip
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Stream crossings, wooded scenery, and a quieter mountain trail

Beginning near Glen Falls, Chinquapin Mountain offers a more tucked-away experience. The trail crosses streams several times and climbs steadily through the forest by way of switchbacks, making it a good fit for hikers who want a moderate outing with a little more time on the trail.

5. Chattooga Loop Trail

Distance: Almost 2 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: River scenery, forest setting, and a trail the whole family can enjoy

Beginning near Iron Bridge, the Chattooga Loop Trail offers a scenic walk into one of the region’s most beautiful river corridors. Moderate in difficulty and rich in natural beauty, it is especially well suited to families or visitors looking for a trail where the water remains part of the experience from beginning to end.

6. Bartram Trail – Osage Overlook

Distance: 2 miles
Difficulty: Difficult
Highlights: A strong climb and sweeping views of Blue Valley and Tessentee Valley

For hikers in search of more of a challenge, the Bartram Trail segment from the Osage Mountain trailhead offers a rewarding climb. The ascent is steep, with roughly 1,100 feet of elevation gain, but the views from the top of Scaly Mountain make the effort worthwhile. It is an excellent choice for experienced hikers or anyone drawn to a more strenuous day on the trail.
