WHAT IS DESTINATION STEWARDSHIP IN HIGHLANDS?
Destination Stewardship, as defined by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, involves local communities, government agencies, NGOs, and the tourism industry working together to preserve the cultural, environmental, economic, and aesthetic integrity of a place. With Western North Carolina's mountains increasingly attracting visitors, the Highlands Chamber of Commerce/Visit Highlands, NC has taken on the responsibility of managing tourism's impact. This means balancing the benefits of tourism, reducing its negative effects, and using its positive power for the community and environment. The Chamber promotes safe, responsible travel to protect Highlands' unique charm for current and future residents and visitors. Travelers are encouraged to engage in sustainable practices such as using reusable items, supporting local businesses, and respecting local culture. By doing so, visitors can help preserve the beauty and vitality of Highlands for everyone to enjoy.
