High atop the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, waterfalls are part of the landscape and the lore of Highlands. Some are easy scenic stops just minutes from downtown, while others ask for a short walk, a winding drive, or a little more effort. Together, they offer one of the most memorable ways to experience the natural beauty of the area.
Whether you are hoping to walk behind a waterfall, follow a scenic byway, or find a quieter place to pause, these falls are a beautiful place to begin.
1. Dry Falls
Location: U.S. 64 West
Best for: First-time visitors, dramatic views, and an unforgettable walk-behind-the-falls experience
Good to know: Parking is limited and a nominal parking fee is required
Dry Falls is one of the most beloved waterfall stops near Highlands. This 75-foot fall pours over a cliff, allowing visitors to follow a path behind the waterfall while staying relatively dry. From the parking area, stone steps lead down to the viewing path, and there is also a handicap accessible viewing platform.
Important parking note: If the Dry Falls parking lot is full, please return later. Do not block the road or park along the roadside. Keeping the road clear helps protect visitors, residents, and emergency access.
2. Bridal Veil Falls
Location: U.S. 64 West
Best for: An easy scenic stop close to town
Good to know: The falls are visible from the road
Bridal Veil Falls is a classic Highlands stop and one of the most recognizable waterfalls in the area. This small, picturesque fall is one of three main waterfalls in the Cullasaja Gorge and can be seen from U.S. 64 West. Visitors may walk behind its gentle “veil,” and afternoon light often brings a soft rainbow to the falls.
From downtown Highlands, travel less than three miles on U.S. 64 West and look for Bridal Veil Falls on the right.
3. Cullasaja Falls
Location: U.S. 64 West
Best for: Roadside views and dramatic scenery
Good to know: View from the road; do not hike to the base
Cullasaja Falls is a powerful series of rushing waterfalls along the Cullasaja River. At 250 feet high and framed by a dramatic cliff face, it is one of the most striking sights along the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway. The falls are easily viewed from the road, but it is not safe to hike down to the base.
Be sure to park completely off the road when stopping to view the falls. Passing trucks need both lanes to navigate the curve safely.
4. Bust Your Butt Falls
Location: U.S. 64 West
Best for: A quick stop along the scenic byway
Good to know: Use caution around swift currents and slippery rocks
Bust Your Butt Falls, also known as Quarry Falls, is a series of stair-step falls on the Cullasaja River. This popular stop is a place to park, stretch your legs, take in the view, and enjoy the sound of the water close by.
As with all waterfalls, use care near the water. Rocks can be slippery, currents can move quickly, and hidden rocks can make footing difficult.
5. Glen Falls
Location: Highway 106, Dillard Road
Best for: A waterfall hike with multiple views
Good to know: The hike down is easier; the hike back up is steep
Glen Falls is made up of three 80-foot falls, with the entire trail descending about 700 feet in one mile. The reward is a memorable series of waterfall views, but visitors should plan for the climb back. Wear proper shoes, bring water, and allow enough time to enjoy the trail safely.
From Highlands, take N.C. 106 toward Dillard, Georgia. In about two miles, look for the sign to the falls, then follow the road to the parking area.
6. Whitewater Falls
Location: U.S. 64 East toward Cashiers
Best for: A dramatic waterfall view
Good to know: Follow signs to the falls from the Cashiers area
Whitewater Falls is the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains, with the upper portion falling 411 feet. Fed by the Whitewater River, it cascades over massive rock pillars and offers a breathtaking view for visitors willing to make the drive.
From Highlands, take U.S. 64 East to Cashiers, then turn right onto N.C. 107 South. Continue into South Carolina, turn left onto S.C. 130 South, and follow signs to Whitewater Falls.
7. Silver Run Falls
Location: Near Cashiers
Best for: Families, a short walk, and a peaceful waterfall stop
Good to know: Use caution when crossing lanes to park
Silver Run Falls is a beautiful 25-foot waterfall with a pool for swimming and rocks nearby for lounging. The short 500-foot walk to the falls makes it a good option for families or visitors looking for an easy waterfall outing.
From Highlands, head down U.S. 64 East toward Cashiers. At the light in Cashiers, turn right onto N.C. 107, then continue until you see the sign and parking for Silver Run Falls.
Waterfall Safety
Waterfalls are beautiful, but they should always be enjoyed with care. The safest view is from a marked trail, overlook, or designated viewing area.
Before you go:
Stay on established trails and avoid shortcuts.
Heed all posted warning signs.
Never climb on or around waterfalls.
Stay behind guard rails and fences.
Never wade or play in water feeding a waterfall.
Keep children and pets close.
