Planning a trip to Highlands? Here are five tips that will make your trip a relaxing getaway.

Tip #1: Grab Some Maps!

The first thing you should plan to do when you get into town, is to stop by the Welcome Center and grab some maps of the area. Because we're in the mountains, cell phone coverage can be spotty, so plan for a backup if the maps on your phone fail you! When at the Welcome Center, ask for the Highlands Business Guide map and the area map. These maps will help you navigate the town and surrounding areas, ensuring you don't miss any of the must-see spots.

Tip #2: Bring an umbrella or rain jacket!

Highlands is a temperate rain forest, so we get plenty of rain. Sometimes a short rain shower will pop up even when sunny skies are predicted. Don't get caught in the rain without an umbrella or rain jacket. If you're not sure what the weather is looking like in town, check out the town webcam for a real time view of what's happening on Main Street. Being prepared for the weather will help you enjoy your trip without any unexpected dampeners.

Tip #3: Check out the events calendar

Utilize the local events calendar that you can find in businesses around town or go to our events page to see what's happening when you're in town. The Laurel Magazine is also another great resource for planning events and things to do during your stay! From art festivals to live music and farmers' markets, there's always something exciting happening in Highlands. Checking the events calendar in advance ensures you won't miss out on any unique experiences.

Tip #4: Get an early start on outdoor activities

If you're planning a day of hiking or waterfall exploring, we recommend starting your day early to avoid crowds and avoid getting caught on a trail after dark. If you are planning on visiting one of our most popular waterfalls, Dry Falls, get there before lunchtime, which tends to be the busiest time. An early start also means cooler temperatures if you're visiting in the Summer and a better chance to spot wildlife. Don't forget to pack snacks, water, and a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery.

Tip #5: Book a reservation!

Highlands' busiest seasons are summer and fall, so if you're planning a trip during those times, make your reservations for accommodations and dining in advance. Popular restaurants and inns fill up quickly, so securing your spots ahead of time will ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.
